The cell is the basic unit of living organisms, but you already know that. As with the previous page, this page will contain basic information as well. Here is a horribly simple drawing of an animal cell:
plasma membrane: Surrounds the cell as a selectively permeable membrane. We will investigate its structure later.
cytoplasm: Composed mostly of water.
nucleus: Contains genetic information, or instructions for making molecules (DNA).
ribosome: Produces proteins.
lysosome: Contains enzymes that digests wastes.
mitochondrion: Breaks down glucose with oxygen to produce energy.
endoplasmic reticulum: Transports materials throughout the cell.
